Training SPARK North East Link

In August, Civil Survey Solutions delivered a two-day, on-site Civil 3D Fundamentals course for SPARK North East Link’s surveying team. The training was led by our expert instructor, Rachael Murray, at SPARK’s offices and focused on practical, survey-driven workflows.

Who is SPARK NEL?

SPARK North East Link is the consortium delivering Melbourne’s North East Link Tunnels, a major component of Victoria’s Big Build, spanning design, construction and long-term operations.

What we covered (Core curriculum)

Our Civil 3D Fundamentals course includes the essentials for anyone in construction and design:

  • Points – import, manage and style controls

  • Surfaces – creation, edits, analysis and visual styles

  • Alignments – creation, constraints and best practice

  • Sites & Parcels – site organisation and parcel tools

  • Grading – grading objects, targets and design checks

Tailored for surveyors

On the day we dialled up the topics that matter most to field and office survey teams:

  • Importing points and surfaces from CSV and LandXML

  • Applying/adjusting styles for fast QA and presentation

  • Using gradings to check falls across pads

  • Profiles & profile views to confirm pipe cover

  • Surface labels to check slopes and quickly communicate design intent

Delivery & setup

This was a fully managed, on-site course. We supplied laptops preloaded with the latest Civil 3D and all training datasets—so attendees could turn up and get straight into hands-on exercises.

Outcomes & feedback

Participants left confident to apply Civil 3D on upcoming works. Post-session conversations centered on:

  • Using grading tools for pad checks

  • Leveraging profiles for pipe cover verification

  • Standardising surface styles and labels for faster reviews

Following the success of this first session, we’re returning in September to train the remainder of SPARK’s Survey team.
