Barker Ryan Stewart Delivering Major Projects with BIM Coordination

Customer Challenge

Barker Ryan Stewart is a dynamic engineering consultancy located in Sydney, delivering subdivision, commercial and industrial civil engineering projects.  Barker Ryan Stewart switched from AutoCAD LT to using Civil 3D over 10 years ago to improve efficiencies and project coordination.

Recently they were invited to participate in a multi-disciplinary, multimillion-dollar government project.  Barker Ryan Stewart were invited in to deliver design for major sections of the road network throughout the site, with multiple intersections and including coordinating with other designers working on connecting to the roads for car parks, buildings and other infrastructure.

In order to facilitate the coordination of project data from various designers, BIM-enabled modelling was mandated for the project, including the use of BIM 360 for document management and digital design review, data coordination and construction sequencing via Navisworks.

Barker Ryan Stewart needed to produce design information very rapidly and contribute to the overall BIM-mandated project.

Project Goals

Barker Ryan Stewart needed to achieve the following:

  • Leverage design tools to facilitate rapid model generation to meet tight time constraints
  • Create deliverables in the required format for consumption in BIM 360 and Navisworks
  • Seamlessly integrate with systems and software utilised in the project to ensure error-free coordination with other design teams

Solution

Working with Civil Survey Solutions, Barker Ryan Stewart adopted a solution built on Autodesk Civil 3D, to harness the power of Autodesk Civil 3D to participate directly in the BIM ecosystem.  Additionally, they were able to connect into the central BIM 360 model simply by saving their drawing into the BIM 360 project.

Barker Ryan Stewart leveraged the power of an Australian localisation application, Civil Site Design, to enable rapid road network design creation and to automate the generation of a complete Civil 3D Corridor.  Saving the drawing to the BIM 360 document management system automatically enabled connection to Navisworks for project coordination and digital construction, to ensure coordination with other designers.

Business Outcome

With the support of Civil Survey Solutions, using the power of Autodesk Civil 3D and expanding on the exceptional skills and experience of the design team, Barker Ryan Stewart were able to deliver their designs for the project on an accelerated timeline and on budget.

Conclusion

Barker Ryan Stewart continue building on their reputation in the industry as a dynamic, nimble civil consultancy firm capable of delivering on major projects.  Their designers are led by a progressive team leader, encouraging them to lead in the industry by exploring new software enhancements and optimising design delivery to their clients.

City of Parramatta Council Delivering Design Efficiencies

Customer Challenge

City of Parramatta Council (CoPC) is a local government organisation servicing over 225,000 residents, located approximately 25km west of central Sydney. Parramatta City Central Business District (CBD) is one of the major suburban employment destinations for the region of Greater Western Sydney.

The Civil Design Team plays a key role in the delivery of a significant portion of CoPC’s total Capital Works Program, which over the last 20 years has increased from approximately $5M to over $85M annually. This has resulted in a huge increase in the number of projects required to be designed and delivered.

Recognising the need to build more efficiencies in the Organisation, CoPC’s Supervisor Civil Design, worked closely with Civil Survey Solutions to expand on the design capabilities at the CoPC, without significantly increasing staff numbers to meet this ever increasing project demand.

Project Goals

CoPC had three key objectives in reviewing their software:

  • Improve the existing skill set of the current design team;
  • Identify aspects of the design workflow to increase design efficiency without compromising existing high standards; and
  • Produce high quality detailed plans & designs to align with relevant Council and General Civil Engineering industry standards.

Solution

CoPC worked closely with Civil Survey Solutions and implemented a combination of Civil 3D software together with a local Australian civil engineering application, Civil Site Design, to deliver rapid road reconstruction design, site works, pipe design and production outputs to align with Council and Australian design standards and guidelines.

Business Outcome

Having fully implemented these applications and trained all engineering staff, CoPC are now delivering 4-5 times as many engineering design projects as they were previously, without compromising on design outputs and within similar staffing levels.

Additionally, as new features are introduced in the software, staff are able to expand their presentation skills which greatly assist their stakeholder management.

Conclusion

Working with Civil Survey Solutions has enabled CoPC to meet their high design expectations and keep staff motivated by modern, dynamic and visual software solutions tailored to their design requirements.
